Tips for eating healthy on a budget

how to eat healthy on a budget

Are you always finding that you go WAY over your food budget every month? And the food you eat is maybeee not the healthiest? As a young adult, I’m trying so hard to save money while at the same time, not sacrifice my health, and boy can it be hard to achieve that balancing act. After years of experimenting, here are my top 5 tips for eating healthy on a budget:

1. Beware of prepackaged foods

I try to do most of my grocery shopping along the edges of the store. This is where you’ll find veggies, fruit, meats, fish, and fresh bread. Prepackaged foods tend to not be as great for your health and are typically more expensive. So, in order to eat healthy within your budget, choose more whole foods. However, yessss, we do need some ice cream every once in a while. 😊

2. Find recipes & prioritize time to cook

Everyone says, “I don’t have time to cook!” The truth is everyone has time to cook, but no one wants to make it a priority. The health of you and your loved ones is soooo important, so experiment with some recipes using fresh, whole foods and see what you can come up with! As a result, your stomach and your wallet will thank you.

3. Check out online weekly ads

If you check out the weekly ads online for your local supermarket, they’ll provide the best sales for certain fruit and veggies. This can really help you stick with eating healthy on your budget each week.

4. Don’t waste food

I’ll be honest, there are days when I don’t finish my meal, or the expiration date approaches and I still don’t feel like eating it. Wasting even just a little food can add up over the weeks and that’s essentially like throwing your money in the trash. My recommendation is to only buy those things you know you’ll definitely use, utilizing your freezer to store food, or donating food to others.

5. Make a list

Try making a shopping list before you head to the supermarket. This can help you stick with your plan and eat healthy on a budget. Also, remember never to grocery shop on an empty stomach, because we all know what happens when you’re starving at the supermarket. Planning is a lifesaver!
