Do you sometimes have trouble expressing yourself through speech? Ever since I was young, I felt like the words I spoke were never enough to convey how I truly felt. Thankfully, I found dance which taught me how to express my thoughts through movement. Here are my top 5 reasons why dance is great when you’re an introvert:
1. You can express yourself without words
Someone who is introverted will not always express themselves verbally. That’s why, non-verbal communication is their forte. Dance is powerful in that you’re able to speak entirely through movement. And there’s so many types of dance, it’s impossible not to find something to spark your interest. I practiced ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary while growing up, and it was an amazing outlet for me to express myself. Also, dance is a killer workout! So, don’t forget your water. If you’re not able to attend a dance class, there are tons of YouTube videos that you can check out. Learning new dances also helps your mind become stronger, so get out there and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. And always remember, when you dance, you can say a thousand words without speaking one.
2. You can meet new people
Sometimes it can be hard to meet new people when you’re introverted, because it takes time to really get to know an introverted individual. Cue the dance class. If you’ve ever thought of taking a dance class, definitely give it a try. Whether it be ballroom, hip-hop, or tap, it’s a great opportunity to meet others while doing something fun at the same time.
3. You can practice solo
Although you can meet new people at dance classes, a lot of practice goes into becoming a great dancer, which can mean a lot of practicing alone. As an introvert, I thrived when I was accomplishing an independent task, so dance really helped me enjoy my time.
4. you have The freedom to be creative
No matter who you are, we’re all creative in one way or another. When you practice dance, you can put your own unique touch into the dance. You can also choreograph the dance, which means create the movements behind the dance. Music is also an important component when you dance, and there’s so much creativity that goes into creating a dance to a specific piece of music. Needless to say, there’s a lot of room for creativity and innovation, which is important if you’re looking for somewhere to channel that creativity.
5. You’ll gain confidence
No matter what age you are, I think that dance has the ability to increase your confidence. In my life, I’ve felt empowered every time I accomplished a new dance technique. My mental and physical strength also benefited from dancing, because I had to think about my movements and connect every part of my body. Confidence is hard to muster at times, especially if you’re new to dancing and feeling vulnerable. But just remember that after a lot of practice, you’ll start to slowly feel that confidence within you.
I hope some of the reasons why dance is great when you’re an introvert will help you take to the floor and express yourself more. The world needs it! Let me know in the comments section what you do to express yourself, and check out more lifestyle content here. Thanks for reading!
