Best things to do in Amsterdam for a weekend

Have you been dreaming of visiting Amsterdam during this pandemic? I had the opportunity of visiting in February a number of years ago, and it remains one of my favorites. There’s so much to see and do whether you visit solo or with friends. In the winter, it was still pretty cold, so bundle up if you visit during the cold months! Here were some of the best things to do in Amsterdam for a weekend, in my opinion:

1. See the narrow houses along the canal

These historic Dutch houses along the canals are extremely picturesque and most likely what comes to mind when you think of Amsterdam. Whenever I travel to a new city, my favorite part is walking around the area and immersing myself in the lifestyle. I felt like Amsterdam was very walkable, so get out there and enjoy the fresh air.

2. The canals of Amsterdam

The city was built around the canals, which are like the heartbeat of the city. If you book a canal tour, you’re sure to see the city from a variety of perspectives. This was probably the best thing I did in Amsterdam that weekend.

3. The Red Light District (De Wallen)

This is very much a tourist attraction, as there are not many places like it. The Red Light District is an area of the city where prostitution is legal and women stand behind glass doors. At night, the area is lined with glowing red lights from the lamp posts. It’s one of those areas that we witnessed from a distance.

4. Amsterdam’s new church (Nieuwe Kerk)

There are a number of stunning churches in Amsterdam, including the new church or Nieuwe Kerk. We weren’t able to see all the churches, but the one’s we did were breathtaking.

5. The food!

When you’re in Amsterdam you have to try the Dutch food. Although we didn’t get a chance to taste all the flavors of Amsterdam, we did try the stroopwafel, which is a sweet thin waffle-like pastry. It definitely satisfies the sweet tooth! What’s on your food list for Amsterdam? Share in the comments section!

Of course, there are so many more places I didn’t name in this list. That’s why I’d love to hear about where your Amsterdam adventure takes you in the comments section. Let me know some of your standout experiences! Looking for more travel content? Check out my other travel destinations here.
