Are you someone who loves spending time outside in nature? Then taking a trip to the Tivoli Gardens (Villa d’Este) in Italy won’t disappoint! If you travel to Rome, you’re less than hour away from these gardens, so it makes for the perfect day trip. The Tivoli Gardens are picturesque, unique, and an amazing way to spend an afternoon. There’s a fee to enter the garden, but I thought it was definitely worth the price. For more information, check out their website here. So, let’s get to the list! Here are the top 5 reasons you should visit the Tivoli Gardens in Tivoli, Italy:
1. The unique beauty of the gardens
As you start your journey through the gardens, take a moment and see as much of the greenery as possible. There are clouds of trees surrounding the area that tower over the walkways and fountains. These massive trees feel powerful and protective, almost like they’re keeping everything hidden and mysterious. You’ll see beautiful gardens filled with flowers of all colors. Notice the vines that grow along the stone statues and slither their way up the highest monuments. Make time stop as you stroll through the gardens and forget about the plans for tomorrow. Sometimes we all need to do that for a little bit!
2. The stunning fountains
You will be in awe of all the different types of fountains found in the Tivoli Gardens. They come in all shapes and sizes; some shoot water far up in to the sky, while others gently caress the ground below. One fountain depicts a mighty ship sending water from its inside out. There’s another fountain composed of many fountains within it, like a grand masterpiece showering the world from above. If you look closely, you’ll see just how old the stone of the fountains is. You’ll smell the water, trees, and fresh air around you, a perfect companion throughout your journey at the gardens.
3. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Once you set foot in the gardens, you’ll have no doubt as to why this is a world heritage site! There’s a lot of history written throughout every corner of the gardens. The Tivoli Gardens are simply stunning. And it’s not only the fountains, but the monuments and statues that drip with Italian history. Be sure to research as much as you can before, during, and after your visit. As always, learning about the history of a place gives you much more of a connection between yourself and your environment. Keep on learning!
4. The influence of the Italian Renaissance
I’m definitely not an expert on Italian history or the Renaissance, but if you’re looking for a spot with no shortage of its influence, then the Tivoli Gardens will be just the place for you. You’re sure to find architecture and design of the Italian Renaissance in the stone structures, statues, figurines, and fountains. Even though these structures were built hundreds of thousands of years ago, the beauty is unmistakable and worth every picture.
5. A perfect day trip from Rome
If Rome is your destination, but you have a day for something extra, plan a trip to the Tivoli Gardens. It was one of my most memorable days in Italy. You don’t need to be a nature lover either. If you’re simply in the mood for a little relaxation away from the crowds of people in the city, then the Tivoli Gardens won’t disappoint. You won’t need more than a couple hours to visit, so plan accordingly, and be sure to check the weather beforehand. Additionally, if you’re planning on taking lots of pictures, plan to end your day as the sun sets for some amazing lighting.
