Best things to do in Seoul for a week

Are you dreaming of seeing South Korea during these pandemic times? Well, it’s never too early to start planning your trip. I visited Seoul during the spring a few years ago. My brother was studying abroad there, so it was the perfect chance to visit him and explore a new country at the same time. Here are my top 5 recommendations for best things to do in Seoul for a week in 2021 and beyond. I hope these ideas spark some South Korean wanderlust!

1. Go hiking

When you head off on one of the many hikes around Seoul, you’re bound to see some amazing views of the city. I would recommend visiting Namsan Mountain, which is right in the heart of Seoul. It’s also a great way to get your exercise in for the day and catch a beautiful sunset. Be sure to carve out a few hours for all the walking, bring water, and of course, your camera. They do have a cable car available for a fee if you’re not wanting to hike to the top. Overall, this was one of my favorite things to do while in Seoul.

2. Visit the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)

DMZ

The DMZ stands for the demilitarized zone which separates South Korea and North Korea. You’ll need to book a tour in order to see the DMZ. I thought it was worth the money to see something quite unique. The bus ride was about two hours from Seoul and if you get hungry, there were a few places upon arrival that offered food. If you’re not afraid of small, confined places, then you may have the opportunity to go into the tunnels. It was pretty interesting to be a part of history in that way, as I’ve heard the tunnels were created by soldiers planning on invading the other side. Even though the experience was fascinating, it made me sad to think about the division between people and how I wish we could all come together one day.

3. Stroll through Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace is the main and largest of all five grand palaces built in the Joseon Dynasty from 1392–1910. You’ll need a couple hours to stroll through the entire place as it’s expansive with tons to see. Make sure to admire the details of each building and walk through the entire palace grounds. There may be an entrance fee if you decide to go inside certain palaces, but it’s definitely worth it.

4. Dongdaemun and Gwangjang Market

Dongdaemun Market and Gwangjang Market are huge shopping districts full of stalls with affordable clothing, street food, and so much more. There are thousands of stalls, so be sure to carve out an hour or more depending on your love for shopping. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Seoul for a week when you have time.

5. Noryangjin Fish Market

This is the largest fish market in Seoul and attracts a ton of tourists every year. There’s a plethora of seafood to choose from, and you can negotiate your price with the vendor. I remember we purchased a small octopus and ate it while the tentacles were still moving. (It was very fresh.) My brother would also recommend drinking some Soju (a Korean beer) with your fresh seafood. Can’t leave South Korea without a drink of Soju.

6. Myeong Dong Night Market

During the night, Myeong Dong Market is bustling with visitors. This is another market which offers street food, shopping, and people watching. There’s every kind of street food you can think of, so enjoy!

7. Go back in time at Bukchon Hanok Village

Bukchon Hanok Village is a historic village dating back almost 600 years to the Joseon Dynasty. A hanok is an traditional wooden house that were popular back in the day. Throughout history, the old style buildings have been replaced by newer concrete structures. If you visit, make sure to be as quiet as possible since residents still live in these houses. I loved learning about Korea’s history while strolling through the village, so definitely a must-do while in Seoul.

In conclusion, each visit to Seoul has left with me with amazing memories and a yearning to return. However, whether you visit with a friend or solo, you’re sure to create your own unique, unforgettable memories. I hope this list of the best things to do in Seoul for a week got your wanderlust juices flowing for an Asian adventure soon!
